What is SEO? This is search engine optimization or, in simple words, website promotion in the issuance of Yandex, Google or Rambler. The history of Search engine optimization can be divided into Five large periods from the 1990s to 2019.

Birth of SEO: The computer boom in the 90s of the last centuries, the emergence of the global Internet pushed the development of search engines. The developers had a question, by what criteria should the site be selected for delivery and how to rank resources? Experts have chosen a breakthrough technology for that time. Robots counted search queries in page texts and determined the places of sites in the results by their number. Until 1998, many believed that SEO promotion was spam as key queries. Reference boom: Since 1998, Google has introduced a link ranking algorithm that is familiar to all SEOs – PageRank. The essence of the innovation was that the page rank was determined by counting links to the resource. That is the more links to the site from other reputable sites, the better for promotion. A year later, Yandex introduced its own index – TIC, which determined the credibility of Internet resources by their quality and the volume of the link mass. Until 2009, SEO developed exponentially. Agencies for website promotion multiplied, sales and link exchange services expanded. Companies with large budgets for the promotion of 100% were in the TOP issuance.

Machine time: Since 2009, Yandex and Google, as the two main search engines, began to introduce machine learning algorithms. Yandex developers created Matrix net, a machine algorithm that itself builds ranking formulas for a search engine. Link promotion is gradually becoming ineffective.

The fight against link wrapping: Since 2012, search engines have begun to actively fight against link promotion. Google launches the Penguin filter, which blocks sites for poor-quality (wound) links. The algorithm quite accurately searched for sites with twisted links and lowered them in rank. Thus, link promotion – as an independent method – has become meaningless.
